Seamus Gallagher Exhibition Delights audience

A generous crowd gathered in the Warehouse Gallery in Derry on Thursday night for the opening of Coast: Paintings by Seamus Gallagher. On display were a series of seascapes depicting the environment which Seamus grew up with on his doorstep in Derry and which he currently lives among, having resided in Donegal for the past twenty five years. There is a beautiful earthy texture to Seamus’s work and it is clear that he has not just captured his surroundings perfectly but lives and breathes the very sea air reflected in his work. The collection is full of blues of every tone you can imagine when you look out to sea,…

A Man Called Ove – It Grows on You

A Man Called Ove is a strange little story well, about a man called Ove. It’s written by Swedish writer Frederick Beckman. It tells the story of cantankerous old Ove, who lives with his wife. As life goes on Ove is faced with many tragedies and adventures, along the way he befriends his nearest neighbours Parvenah, her daughter and husband and Parvenah’s husband Patrick. This particular gem of a book fell into the hands of this particular reviewer when it was gifted by a cousin for a birthday. At first gratitude and recognition, (having read something both about the book and the subsequent film) and that was that – until…

White Crow

White Crow tells the story of famous ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev and the even more famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view). Told in the third person from the moment of his birth on a trans-siberian railway in the bitterly cold Russian winter. This one event, as with all of its kind shapes the rest of Nureyev as he becomes determined to escape poverty and the country that has done so much to nurture him for what he sees as his chance to escape to a better life. It is strange to think of the world of the cold war, especially if you have been brought not knowing…

Welcome to the world of Zorg – and no they’re not the start of an alien invasion

From the south west of France, via Australia, Africa and then back again. Musically this is where Zorg comes from. From the region of Occitan, the band also perform/sing in their own dialect of the same name, which comes both geographically and linguistically somewhere between France and Spain. You might not think it but in a strange kind of way it works and on a quiet Tuesday night in Bennigans in Derry they unleashed themselves on an unsuspecting crowd. The atmosphere had been building up for hours. The band were advertised as taking to the stage at 8, but didn’t start until 11 – it didn’t matter. The crowd by…

Warehouse Gallery Summer Exhibition

A wealth of artistic talent from around the northwest gathered at the Warehouse Gallery in Derry on Thursday night for the opening of their summer exhibition. Among the many great work on display were paintings in oil, sculptures moulded from clay to expressive figures in cartoon form reminiscent of characters from children’s books. The work illustrated just how much talent there is within this tiny corner of the island and is another great coup for the Warehouse Gallery in Derry which continues to showcase artistic talent from throughout the northwest. The paintings shown are just a taste of the work and talent on show. For more details on the artists…
